Inclusive STEAM Education is a newly articulated educational approach that combines knowledge, practices and instructional methodologies from Educational Inclusion and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Education. It takes as its starting point the integration of as many STEAM disciplines as possible and the talents, interests and needs of students. It aims to encourage and support inquiry, dialogue, collaboration, problem solving, critical thinking and awareness of diversity and disability in all students. In Inclusive STEAM Education, no student should be left behind in STEAM classrooms. On the contrary, all students, regardless of their learning, cultural, socioeconomic profiles or special educational needs should have equal opportunities to develop STEAM competences required by future societies and labour markets.
The Inclusive STEAM Alliance, which is developed as part of the SpicE (Special Education STEAM Academy) project, aims to bring together allies such as Universities, Ministries of Education, education providers, networks, or other stakeholders in the field of Educational Inclusion, STEAM Education or Inclusive STEAM domains, as well as schools and teachers of all educational levels, under a common goal: to promote Inclusive STEAM Education in primary as well as in other levels of education.
Our mission is to break down barriers and create pathways for underrepresented student populations, such as those of students with special educational needs and in particular those with Mild Disabilities, by providing resources and educational and collaborative opportunities to all stakeholders involved in Inclusive STEAM educational practices. Our vision is to build a global community that thrives on inclusion, creativity and interdisciplinary collaboration, driving the future of innovation and discovery. By championing diversity, we envision a more equitable STEAM education landscape that empowers individuals to reach their full potential and contribute to solving the world’s most pressing challenges and problems.

Project SpicE
The Inclusive STEAM Alliance is developed as part of the SpicE (Special Education STEAM Academy) project, with the contribution of all project partners. The SpicE project is a 3-year long project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Teacher Academies programme. The SpicE project brings together ten (10) partners from five (5) European countries, which are the following:
- Hellenic Open University (HOU), Greece (Coordinator)
- Research Innovation and Development LabPrivate Company (ReadLab), Greece
- University of Macedonia (UoM), Greece
- University of Alicante (UA), Spain
- Sindikat Obrazovanie Kam Kt Podkrepa (TUT), Bulgaria
- Trakia Universitet (TUNI), Bulgaria
- Osnovno Uchilishte Hristo Smirnenski (OUHS), Bulgaria
- University of Cyprus (UCY), Cyprus
- Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MOESY), Cyprus
- European Schoolnet (EUN), Belgium
SpicE innovates in combining STEAM Education with Inclusive Education; STEAM is used both as the means and as the purpose for enhancing Primary Education in-service and pre-service Teachers’ ability to implement effective STEAM instruction and protect students with Mild Disabilities from educational and social exclusion. The project has already delivered a Gap Analysis showing existing gaps in pre-service and in-service (Bulgarian, Cypriot, Greek and Spanish) primary teachers’ knowledge in Inclusive STEAM Education, their training needs in Inclusive STEAM Education and the prioritization of educational goals in this field. In addition, it delivered an Inclusive STEAM Educator Competence Framework, identifying educators’ skills gaps and mapping them to existing and new job profiles, an Education Framework for STEAM in Special Education, a Joint curriculum for STEAM in Special Education and a pilot, 3-phase (Massive Open Online Course-MOOC, Blended Learning, Mobilities) Inclusive STEAM Educational Programme in 4 countries. SpicE has also created and nurtured a strong Community of Practice that will, eventually, spawn a permanent “Inclusive STEAM Alliance” structure.
